Dear Class,
In case you didn't jot it down, section 2 of Jimmy Corrigan is pp. 101-200.  For your new blog response, read section 2 and read the article I distributed in class.  Then respond to the following questions:
1) Do you find superheroes or antiheroes more appealing?  Why?
2) What have your reactions to Jimmy Corrigan's character been so far?

Due: before our next class meeting, as usual
Have a good weekend!

  1. 1)Actually both types of heroes. I used to only watch cartoons and look at comics for the imagery. Fascinating. Now, since this class, I actually pay more attention to detail and situational commentary. Wow, have comics always been this interesting? I'm actually finding them a bit more enjoyable, appreciating more.
2)Jimmy really needs to try to find and make some friends in his age range. Although, Jimmy has got an amazing imagination. Maybe he will continue to develop his imagination, while associating with others outside his family. Maybe, just maybe, someday, learn to express his imagination through other mediums...like comics, movies, etc. Anyway, back to the "Q", Jimmy Corrigan's character seems plausible to a real life only child families(broken families). The more I get into this book, with the help of classroom discussion, the more enlightening it gets, fun. Print is a bit small for me, so I find myself using a magnifier at times, hoping not to miss much. Still get lost periodically.

  2. 1) I seem to like anti heroes more appealing like spider man becuase those characters are more realistic in a way. They are interesting becuase they have this intense power and yet since they are human they still have the agencey to choose and sometimes make wrong choices. If you think about it every single person has incredible abilities but that doesn't always mean that they will always be impermeable beings.

    2) I find Jimmy and his life pathetic. He seems to have no goals or ambitions. He hides in his imaginition as a source of comfort. He doesn't seem to be alive really. He is just there present like a wall or a lamp light. True it appears that he comes from a messed up family but I have met plenty of people who are similar situations and they made chioces whether they were good or bad. Jimmy doesn't seem to make any choices.

  3. 1) I find antiheroes more appealing because they are more realistic. An antihero, like spiderman, is someone that anyone can relate to. They have flaws which makes them more human.

2)I am not very fond of Jimmy. His character seems so static. He does not seem to be making any progress in his life. Jimmy seems to no have any personality. The author does not give him much voice. He does not seem to talk about what he feels and thinks, and that is kind of annoying.

  4. 1) Antiheroes because it adds more depth to character and enables development throughout the story. Readers can also more easily associate themselves with the antihero and that creates a special connection that doesn't happen too much with perfect superheroes.

    2) The feeble attitude Jimmy has makes me very sympathetic; the blame isn't entirely on him either, a lot of the flashbacks seem traumatic. Obviously he has no confidence and the way I see him is like a child's mind in an adult body.

  5. 1) Antiheroes appeal to me more than superheroes due to the fact that they are somewhat real. They deal with everyday, social issues like everyone else in the world. Superheroes on the other hand are too predictable, although they represent everything that is good around us, they don't seem to know what it is like to be a real human being.

    2) So far, I like that although Jimmy doesn't seem to open up about himself, we can all relate to him at our weakest points in life. Nothing goes his way and everyone looks down upon him. So in a way Jimmy is modern day antihero. Because if something unfortunate happens to us we can look at Jimmy and say "at least we don't have it as bad as him." Therefore i enjoy this character.

  6. 1) I find antiheroes more appealing because you can relate to their character. Every person has a good and bad side, and I feel like antiheroes have this characteristic also because we don’t always make the right choices and that’s normal because everybody makes mistakes, superheroes seem to come off as a fantasy character that you can’t relate too.
    2) Jimmy Corrigan’s characteristic is very annoying. He acts like he is a big baby, and has no goals in life. The readings seem like he’s wining about absolutely unnecessary things, and his flashbacks are so confusing because he jumps around so much. Also, he doesn’t seem to express his actual feelings at all.

  7. 1)I honestly cant say im one sided in either direction in regards to super/anti super. I can say that if i had the choice, id be a SUPERhero, but in my option of reading/viewing a comic book hero, i cant say. I enjoy watching superheroes save the day like batman/spiderman or whatnot, but also get a kick out of the pathetic yet seemingly often times successful attempts to plot against the world from the anti-hero.

2)Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. Other than the fact that i cant tell which character is actually Jimmy half the time, i find the actual Jimmy pathetic and worthless. He shouldve gotten over his worthless family by now, especially his father, and even his mom, who is holding him back, and get on with his freaking life already...

  8. #1) To me super heroes are very predictable; they are always good and seem to never die. That is why i find antiheroes more appealing. to me they are more suspenseful and face obstacles that arent so easy to over come like temptation. The suspense lies in the anti-heroes choice, either to give into bad, or keep their morals that they were taught.

#2)I think its sad how Jimmy Corrigan is so screwed up in the head. Some of the things he imagines is so crazy and unreal. I think that if jimmy expressed his feelings more he can stand a chance with a girl, his dad and finally stand up to his mom.

  9. 1.Superheroes or Antiheros never really was appealing to me. Especially superman, I don’t really think that he is that cool. I already knew all about superman because of the TV show series Smallville. This article didn’t make me more or less fond of any type of hero. I don’t really look at them as awesome people with powers. I just look at them as made up characters that someone decided to draw up one day. But I would have to say antiheroes because they are more realistic and have more “human” characteristics than superheroes.
2.My reactions to Jimmy Corrigan have been ridiculous. I’m pretty sure I make a face of either confusion or shock after every page. Even though this is a lot more graphic and way more detailed than what I am used to reading, but I love it. I am always wanting to read what is going to happen next. I find humor in all of it. Jimmy Corrigan is crazy, but I just think he says exactly what he feels, and so do the rest of the characters.

  10. 1) I find the antihero more appealing. He will try as hard as anyone to be like the superhero, and fall flat on his face like anyone else. I can relate to them more than the superhero, and I end up with more sympathy towards the antihero than the superhero.

    2) Im not sure how much I like Jimmy. He seems to have all sorts of social problem, but unlike James, he has no explanation for it. James' situation with an abusive father and the like had made me sympathize with him. Jimmy may have some reason for his behavior but at the moment it hasn't presented itself.

  11. 1) I find superheroes more appealing because I always seem to identify with them-as one of the good ones who want to save the world. Yes it may seem like a cliche, but I find them very interesting because they make it an effort to put others first, even if it means sacrificing their happiness and risking their own lives. They sometimes make me want to be selfless. And we can also easily relate to them because they are not perfect, but they're far from it. Every superhero that I know has weaknesses too, besides super powers. They also face tough choices and difficult circumstances like all of us do.

    2) I pity Jimmy. His life seems to be so boring and lifeless. It seems as if he is just always going with the flow and not living his life because of his fears and insecurities. I see him as a victim of life and circumstance because of his family history. Sometimes I just wanna shake him to wake him up and make him see that he can be himself and be liked by others.

  12. 1. i think superheroes is more appealing. its not as easy to relate as to antiheroes, and i think thats why i find it more appealing...its different. although spiderman has powers, he still has daily problems that some people have, but superman is pretty much a symbol of everything that is good.

    2. i think jimmy is a loser, hes pathetic, boring, has no personality, spits no game at the ladies, hes got no self esteem/self confidence, and is clingy to his mom. he needs more life in him

  13. 1) I feel that superheros are more interesting simply because it takes some imagination to relate to them. Superheros are less of a reality than antiheroes, and to me everyday reality is boring because we experience it all the time. Just because we can relate more to something doesn't mean it's going to interest us.

    2) Jimmy is a strange character. I don't fully understand him which makes him quite mysterious in my eyes. He's not your everyday cup of tea. His shy personality makes him seem lifeless, however, I'm willing to bet theres a lot more to Jimmy than we think.

  14. I like heroes because of their unwavering determination. They seem to never give up and I like to see that in a character. It's interesting to see how far they're willing to go. Unlike Spiderman who seems like a big baby.

I like Jimmy. He's a crazy dude. Calling his mom pretending to be someone else, getting hit by a truck on the way to pet a deer. He's interesting and seems to not have much control over what goes on around him, but when bad things happen he doesn't flip out and get angry. Which, in a way makes him a cool guy, because he's not like his dad or granddad. He's not screwing anyone over.

  15. 1.) For me I feel that the antiheroes are more amazing. I am captivated at the darkness of their stories and how inequality and turmoil influenced their loves for the worst. Superheroes are way to generic for me and lack any substance. I like seeing villains like Joker and 2 face in comics because they are unpredictable in what they are going to do.

2.) Jimmy is the most interesting character I have read about in a while. He barely talks and you have to go off of his actions a lot. He is quirky and really shy. He has been sheltered his whole life and i feel like he has never had a real conversation with a woman other than his mother in his entire life.

  16. 1) I find antiheroes more appealing than superheroes because antiheroes still fight for the "good" side, but also bring their own personalities into the field as well. A common superhero, like Superman, fights crime and saves the day the same way every time andn then its over, only to reoccur again. An antihero is much more appealing because they do this same thing , except they are not always so kind to the criminals, or even others for that matter. I find that antiheroes are much more interesting to watch, like in a movie, than a regular hero because the regular hero fights crime just to be good, but the antihero is looking to gain something out of it, for his own personal interest. Like in the movie "Young Guns", Billy the Kid seeks to expose the Santa Fe ring's corruption to the public, but the way that he does this is by in fact killing off every single one, so that he may exact vengeance for the death of his caring, father-like employer, John Tunstell. Antiheros bring their own personal motives to fighting the criminals, which makes it more personal for them and more appealing to see.

    2) So far, my reactions to Jimmy's character are pretty diverse. At first, I felt bad for Jimmy because he has an extremely low self esteem, which prevents him from talking to pretty girls and from having any friends. He also is unfortunately always forced to submit to his mothers overcautious nature. But after reading 200 pages of the book, I'm kind of annoyed by his character. I just get annoyed when he always says "I guess..." or "U-Uh..." and when he always studders! I want him to make some kind of stand to the world, and everybody who treats him badly. I saw a little glimpse of it when he talked to his mother on the phone at the diner, as he showed a little more reluctance to her than usual, but he still needs to step it up if he doesn't want to get pushed around anymore.

  17. 1.I believe that antiheroes are more appealing than superheroes. Antiheroes appeal to a larger audience and the ‘regular joe’ instead of the select few with the ability to fly and shoot webs from their wrists. The anti-hero is more realistic than Superman, or the Hulk.

2.Jimmy seems to be the same person he was when we met him in the beginning of the story. Most of the time, main characters develop, or change throughout the story. But Jimmy is still the same insecure person from page 1.

  18. 1. I find superheros more appealing just because of they are at times perfect. I enjoy trying to imagine myself with similar traits as those such as superman. Flying, super strength would be fun traits to aquire.

    2. I feel that Jimmy is a very shy person that lacks self confidence. Just by looking at the facial expression that he puts on daily shows his character. I don't necessarily feel it is his fault that he lacks the self confidence, as his parents and their parents have to do alot with the way he turned out as well. When Jimmy starts imagining about weird situations, it seems odd at first, but everyone has funny imaginations too. Jimmy is defentially different from the "normal" person, what ever that is suppose to mean, but he has his own traits and personalities just like everyone in this world.

  19. 1)I can't honestly say whether I prefer heroes or anitheroes. I don't think I've been exposed enough to the genre to make an informed decision. I can say that I prefer Spider Man to Superman, but that could easily be the product of his teenage appeal, as the article suggested.
2)Mostly my reactions to Jimmy's character so far, have been ones of disgust and revulsion. The juxtoposition of his extreme social ineptness and his sexual fantasies FREAK ME OUT.

  20. I prefer antiheroes. They appear more human and convincing. I used to root for the bad guys when watching Saturday morning cartoon back in the day. Not all the time, but I always enjoyed the shows with deep characters on both ends of the spectrum, where the "bad guys" aren't always bumbling and incompetent.

Jimmy needs to find a true companion and a meaning for life. He's lonely and bewildered, which is enough for any person. Finding a partner who understands him and setting a heartfelt goal in his life, which he must feel capable of achieving, would be very healthy.

  21. I'm not much a fan of either heroes or antiheroes to be honest. The usual depiction of a hero in comics is of someone intoxicated with power while the antihero is self obsessed with personal motions. Either one, when done right, I can find acceptable.

My inital reactions to the Jimmy Corrigan character was revulsion, then sympathy and finally some empathy. I don't have a good relationship with my father and have had my share of awkward conversations as well.
